About the University of South Wales

The University of South Wales was formed in 2013 by the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport.

Both previous institutions were founded by leading industrialists and professionals, with some of their many previous incarnations being the The South Wales and Monmouthshire School of Mines and the Caerleon College of Education.

Now, with a University of 3,500 staff and two subsidiaries in The College Merthyr Tydfil and the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, we have come a long way. With the University of South Wales, we have created a stronger, larger University with the size and scope to rank and compete with its competitors in the major metropolitan regions of the United Kingdom.

The University of South Wales is a major player in British and global higher education. Whether you assess the employability of our graduates, the applied research of our academics, or the role we play in the economic, social and cultural renaissance of our region, our vibrant University is far more than the sum of its parts.

Not every capable person gets the chance to go to university, and that’s where the University of South Wales will come into its own. Whether in the Heads of the Valleys or the city conurbations of South Wales, the major regions of England or 122 countries across the world, the University of South Wales will offer accessible, distinctive and responsive programmes that open doors for talented people who have the desire and passion to embrace higher education to achieve their personal and professional goals. We already have an enviable track record.

The Guardian Higher Education Award has recognised our UHOVI project as the UK’s leading initiative in widening participation. The Times Higher Awards recognised our Student Support as the best in the UK. We are valued partners of some of the world’s leading companies and major public sector employers.

An excellent university experience has unlocked personal potential for thousands of our students. As the University of South Wales, we are able to transform even more lives both now and for future generations to come.
